Taking a gift home from Phuket for mum and dad? You should, of course, get one of those Thai dancer dolls dressed in silk, or some of that beautifully coloured benjarong china, maybe, or some of those miniature fruits made of clay. All good Thai stuff.

But you don’t have to confine yourself to “ethnic” stuff. Phuket – especially Patong – is full of really original souvenirs. Granted, in these days of globalisation, it’s often impossible to know where a souvenir was made. Many, for sure, were made outside Thailand.

Dutchman Jeroen Deknatel first came to Phuket in 1978. He hadn’t planned to stay but circumstances resulted in him being stuck in this tropical paradise, running one of the island’s earliest dive shops. Over the following three decades, as he explained to Alasdair Forbes, he built his business into a high-end liveaboard operation with an international reputation for taking people to the best dive sites in Thai, Malaysian, Indonesian, Burmese and Indian waters.

Hot stuff at Party Central

Hung Fat's restaurant, Patong.
The East is red, and kinda curvy, too.

February 9 saw the official opening of a new, utterly unique restaurant – Hung Fat’s Szechuan Restaurant, jusy north of Patong. For food and for design there’s certainly nowhere like it in Phuket and probably nowhere in Thailand.
